Topic: Developing People on Purpose

Every store has someone with potential — and too often, that potential gets developed by accident instead of on purpose. The difference between a manager who runs shifts and a leader who builds a bench comes down to two skills: coaching and mentoring. They are not the same thing, and knowing which one the moment calls for changes everything.

This session is for store managers, district leaders, and anyone in RTO responsible for growing people. Participants will learn three practical ways to coach for immediate performance, three ways to mentor for long-term career growth, and how to know which hat to wear — then build both into the daily rhythm of the store. You will leave with conversation frameworks you can use in your very next one-on-one.

Speakers: Jeff Smith and Charles Smitherman Jeff Smith has 20+ years of experience in the RTO space, starting as an account manager for House of Television in August of 2000. Over the years, Jeff has been a store manager, IT manager, and now owner/operator. Since joining Hometown RTO in 2021, he has helped his business partner grow from one store to four (and counting). Jeff also serves as the president of the NYRDA and is a member of the APRO Board of Directors. In June of 2025, Jeff spearheaded the opening of a Mr. Appliance franchise, the first of many new business ventures. When he is not working, he enjoys playing golf, going to baseball games, writing for a fantasy football site (playing in many leagues), and watching football in the fall.

Charles Smitherman has served as CEO of the Association of Professional Rental Organizations (APRO) since 2023, leading a focus on dignity-centered commerce and ethical leadership in the rent-to-own industry. He holds a PhD in International Law, an MSt from Oxford, a JD from the University of Georgia, and is a Certified Association Executive (CAE). He is co-author of The RTO Revolution and writes The RTO Insight Review blog. An ultra-runner and open water swimmer, Charles views leadership as helping people become their best selves.
